Bird Life

The presence of several pools and streams, hedgerows, woods, scrub and meadow areas, means that many types of birds are represented in the area.  As most birds are quite shy and many are small as well, they are not so easy to photograph.

I was surprised at just how hard it is to photograph birds in the wild.  My admiration for the quality photographs of others is now even greater.  Animals that are not used to people behave differently.   Even pigeons keep their distance in the wild, whereas in town you have to be careful not to step on them.

Cygnet almost mature, still with the family group on the private pool on Apedale Road  The larger water birds are easier to photograph especially those who, like this one, have become used to sliced bread.

Some of the photos in the bird gallery are not of the best quality, I will upgrade the gallery as and when I get better photographs.  For now those available serve at least as a partial record of the birds that I have seen in Apedale.

Buzzard high over Miry Arena, not the crispest shot and it has taken a while to come this far!  I look forward to opportunities to improve my skills.

I am only just beginning to learn about the appearance, habits, habitats and songs of birds.  I do know that I have heard birds that I have not seen.  Perhaps I will be lucky enough to see and photograph more of them when the leaves fall and the tree branches become bare.

The gallery of birds I have photographed so far starts here.
