My Apedale (and Old Hill)

The area I refer to when I describe my outings in Apedale is not defined by any particular physical or political boundaries.  I include areas outside of the Community Country Park where they are continuous.  I include Old Hill as it would just be a high point on the northern valley side were it not for the artificial boundary formed by the Audley Road and because it is part of many of my routes.

Left: In the greener green, the area I include in my writings.  This map is derived from the Cycle Map render from OpenStreetMapThere is more about OpenStreetMap and contributing here in my running blog.

Unfortunately the names for particular areas are not always in universal use and those in common use may differ from those shown on the Ordinance Survey map.  Many of the areas are simply not named at all on most maps.  The Community Park map gives names to some areas, though these names may differ from those in common or local use.

The track running from the Apedale Road, alongside the works and all the way to the stile for the right of way to Miles Green, I call the Sawmills track.  This is because the current Ordinance Survey Maps still shows the works as "Sawmill" and because "Concrete Fabrication Plant track" is a rubbish name.  As the location that a Picasa album photo was taken is recorded on a map, confusion over names should not really be an issue.

Unfortunately, the amount of wild land in the area illustrated is already shrinking.  To the left of the Apedale Road (between the pink bits on the map),  some of the green areas have been fenced off and bulldozers have appeared on others.

Much of the land on the opposite side of the road, from Chesterton to the bend, has also been earmarked for development.   This land was 'brownfield', but had been so for so long that it had pretty much become 'greenfield', albeit dotted with a few old car tyres.
